Hans Beijner

Hans Beijner has worked more than 30 years for Ericsson Sweden in various areas of the radio field. He started to work as a RF circuit design engineer designing parts of the NMT mobile system. Hans where 1992 appointed specialist in radio circuit design and in this position worked as a mentor and manager of a group of radio engineers. From 1993 Hans started to work with development of GSM radio systems and later worked with the Japanese PDC system. In 1994 Hans worked with one of the first major indoor coverage contracts for Ericsson, this was in Singapore where there are governmental requirements to provide indoor coverage in Hotels, shopping malls and Government buildings.

In 1996 he moved to Japan where he stayed until 2004, during his time in Japan he worked as technical specialist helping the sales force and as product manager for indoor coverage systems for PDC and the 3G system, during his time in Japan Hans started to look into the possibility to integrate WiFi networks with mobile systems. Hans designed Indoor coverage systems in Tokyo Big Site exhibition halls, Kyoto railway station and, Nagoya railway station and hotel, in these projects Hans had multiple roles as design engineer and as project manager on site.

The 3G system was introduced first in Japan starting 2000 and Hans worked together with the Japanese customers J-Phone and DoCoMo to plan and design parts of the mobile network. Before moving back to Sweden in 2004 Hans helped Ericsson to get a contract of 1500 indoor coverage systems for PDC and 3G from J-Phone. Hans was main technically responsible for the contract and also developed planning guidelines, design rules and verification processes. In Japan Hans also did comparisons of cellular and WiFi based solutions for offices and developed a 3G – Wi-Fi benchmarking tool for indoor office solutions.

Because of his long experience with indoor coverage systems Hans first task after moving back to Sweden in 2004 was to help Ericsson to put together an internal business case to decide which kind of indoor coverage solution gave lowest TCO, (total Cost of Ownership). Hans was here responsible for designing the alternative solutions and to calculate the amount of equipment used, also here WiFi was discussed as an alternative or complementary solution. In Sweden Hans also continued to work as technical specialist helping the sales force with radio related matters and as product marketing manager quantifying the value of technical advantages for radio products.

In 2011 Ericsson started to look more seriously into the possibility to use WiFi as a offload technology for hotspots in mobile networks and Hans was involved into the work to compare different solutions for integrating WiFi into mobile systems. The successful work to find a viable solution to integrate WiFi into mobile networks led to the decision by Ericsson to buy the major WiFi player BelAir that provides carrier grade WiFi solutions which are now being integrated into the mobile systems portfolio from Ericsson. The WiFi solutions developed by BelAir fulfill the latest WiFi standards and BelAir was the first company to provide solutions fulfilling the Passpoint standard for safe and automatic verification of WiFi connections through SIM authentication.
